Mercies Anew: One of the sweetest realities set forth throughout Scripture is that the believer’s entire life stands continually beneath the mercy of God in Christ. Not merely at the beginning of the Christian life, nor only in moments of unusual failure or sorrow, but every single day. “It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning.” Lamentations 3:22-23. We are so accustomed to thinking of mercy only in connection with conversion or forgiveness that we sometimes overlook how completely our lives are surrounded by it. Every breath we draw, every blessing we enjoy, every comfort we receive, every help we need, and every hope of standing before God rests entirely upon mercy from beginning to end. Psalm 68:19.
The older I get, the more precious the mercy of God becomes. When we are younger, we often imagine the Christian life will eventually become far more stable, far more consistent, and far more victorious than it frequently proves to be in actual experience. Yet over time many believers slowly discover how dependent they remain upon mercy every single day. Not merely mercy for past sins, but mercy for present weakness, wandering thoughts, fears, discouragements, failures, burdens, and continual need.
Morning by morning. Storm by storm. Failure after failure. Even unto death itself. “For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting.” Psalm 100:5. His mercy toward His people in Christ remains exactly what it has always been: eternal, free, sovereign, and unchanging. MPJ
